Sustainability
We’ve built WILDNESS considering how sustainable we can become from the outset, there’s no excuse not to.
OUR FABRICS:
None of our pieces contain elastane – just 1% of elastane in a garment means that fabric can’t be recycled or biodegrade. All our fabrics - with the exception of one - can be recycled or will naturally biodegrade in the future.
All our cotton is GOTS certified organic to the manufacturing stage. Organic farming creates healthy soils and means our rivers, lakes and drinking water are kept cleaner too. Conventional cotton uses 16% of all insecticide sold worldwide.
Our jersey is 67% Tencel, which is derived from natural raw material wood, with production processes that minimize environmental impact. The fabric was awarded a European Award for the Environment in 2000 https://www.tencel.com/about. The jersey is produced in Portugal.
The lace in our Tempest collection is woven for us in France with 80% organic cotton and 20% recycled nylon.
We also use organic bamboo viscose. The lack of pesticides, the speed of growth of bamboo and lack of large amounts of water used in its production is a good thing, but to be transparent, the process of making the viscose itself still has room to improve in terms of the chemicals used to create it. Our supplier uses closed loop production reducing waste and enviornmental impact. The end product fabric does biodegrade and can be recycled.
All the thread used in our production is OEKO TEX certified by the supplier.
OUR PRODUCTION:
Our production is deliberately kept as close to home as we can, to reduce our carbon footprint.
A team of highly skilled lingerie specialists sew our collection in a high quality, modern factory we have visited in Romania.
We are committed to small production runs to avoid wastage and good working conditions for our makers.
OUR COMPONENTS & ELASTICS:
90% of our elastics are produced in Europe. We currently don’t have access to major producers’ eco ranges as they require a massive order and the prices from smaller manufacturers are not viable for us at the moment.
All the metal components in our range are manufactured in France.
The dyehouse we use in Italy uses only environmentally approved OEKO TEX certified dyes, previously dyed fabrics we buy are certified OEKO TEX.
All our labels are sewn with recycled nylon thread.
OUR PACKAGING:
All our collection is shipped from the factory to the UK in non plastic compostable bags, by road & sea.
Our hygiene strips and shipping sacks are biodegradable and all our postcards, tissue and stickers are recycled and recyclable.
Our swing tags are FSC certified by our printers and recyclable. The ribbon is organic cotton.
We will be calculating and publishing our carbon footprint on the site and we will be offsetting our emissions, when we have that data.
If there’s more you think we could do at this stage, we’d love to hear suggestions, email us at hello@wildnesslingerie.com.
